Pest Management Professionals: Hands-On Workshops. Register Online - Brochure
The WSU Urban IPM Program is now offering a series of hands-on workshops for Pest Management Professionals. Each workshop listed below will be held at WSU Puyallup in the Structural Pest IPM Facility and Allmendinger Conference Center from 8 am to noon on the date listed. Class size is limited, so register early. Each workshop offers 4 WSDA recertification credits.
November 3, 2009—Bed Bug Inspection and Management
Inspection and management techniques will be demonstrated in a ‘bedbug conducive’ situation. Technicians will learn about bed bug biology and behavior, pest prevention, inspections, and effective management techniques.
December 19, 2009—Insect Identification Workshop
This four-hour workshop will focus on the distinguishing characteristics of common insect orders. Participants will learn “eye ball” characteristics that will be useful in the field or lab and also how to use an insect key. This workshop will include a practice session on insect identification using hand lenses and microscopes.
March 6, 2010—Meet the Beetles
This hands-on workshop will help you learn to distinguish WDOs from non-WDOs. You will also learn about other commonly encountered species and about how to collect and preserve specimens. Participants will have the opportunity to use microscopes and insect keys, too. Attendees are encouraged to bring several unknown beetle specimens to class.
April 20, 2010—IPM and the Pest Management Professional
Specific inspections and accurate problem identification are critical first steps prior to making an application. Also consider the effective IPM methods, such as eliminating conducive conditions. Assess the site to determine what precautions will be necessary when making a pesticide application. Improve pest management and customer relations by learning tips and techniques from experienced pest management professionals.

April 13: WDO Rules and Identification
One of the best opportunities to find and identify WDO insects in their natural environment. Learn how to do a complete WDO inspection and report as well as how to identify structural pests and their damage. Tour and report WDO findings at the WSU Structural Pest IPM Facility. Discover which WDOs damage structures in the Northwest. Individual, group, and instructor-led discussions provide ample opportunities for learning about WDOs, how they thrive in conducive conditions, and writing accurate reports. The class takes place at the WSU Structural Pest IPM Facility.
8 WSDA recertification credits. Class size limited to 21 participants. InterNACHI and ASHI approved. 8 credit hours.
April 14: WDO Damage and Evidence 
Find out how to prepare essential WDO inspection reports and diagrams. This class also covers WDO activity and structural damage. Participants will conduct on-site inspections in two buildings and prepare reports on their findings. Extensive inspection, discussion, and in-class report writing techniques will be covered. The class takes place at the WSU Structural Pest IPM facility.
7 WSDA recertification credits. Class size limited to 21 participants. InterNACHI and ASHI approved. 7 credit hours.
